Hello Words In Progress Players!

Welcome to the Words in Progress FAQ. We’re always working hard to make our game better, but we know you might still have questions. Take a peek at the FAQ below for answers to the most common questions. If you can’t find what you need, you can always send us a message here.

The Words In Progress Team

In our game, we strive to adhere to the default conventions of word games. As a result, there are specific types of words that are not permitted during gameplay. These include:

  • Non-family friendly or offensive words
  • Words with suffixes, prefixes or abbreviations
  • Words that require spaces, hyphens or apostrophes
  • Proper nouns, including names of people, places or brands
  • Words that contain capital letters (German nouns excluded)

We are constantly working on improving the completeness and family friendliness of the wordlists. If you are stil missing a word, or if you want to report a word, you can use the form here. Read more about our full ruleset here.

Playing against your friends in Words in Progress is done through the use of Game Center. There are some steps to take into account:

  1. Make sure that you are friends within Game Center, this can be done through Settings > Game Center > Invite Friends
  2. Make sure that Words in Progress is allowed to access your Game Center friends, this can be done through either the popup (which you will automatically receive when opening the Multiplayer feature of Words in Progress for the first time) or by directly giving us access through Settings > Game Center >  Connect with Friends (turn this on) > Apps that have requested access (turn Words in Progress on)
  3. Make sure that your friends also allow Words in Progress access to their friends lists (otherwise Game Center doesn’t allow invites from and to these accounts). So step 2 needs to be done for both your account and the account of the friend you want to invite.

Another thing to take into account is that none of the Accounts should be restricted through parental controls (as this blocks all applications from accessing a players’ Friends).

Blank tiles dynamically adjust themselves to form valid words. For instance, if we take the word #AN, the blank tile can transform into a C to make the word CAN. Similarly, adding the letter P in front of #AN to make P#AN would prompt the blank tile to transform into an L, forming the word PLAN. The blank tile is never static, and will readjust itself to form a valid word if possible.

If the blank tile cannot transform to create a valid word, it will display as a square (■). However, it remains a blank tile and can still transform into a letter if it contributes to a valid word later. For example, LL#Y becomes LL■Y, because no valid word can be formed, but adding an A to it as ALL#Y would prompt the blank tile to transform into an E, resulting in ALLEY.

Players cannot manually set the value for the blank tile as its value is determined by gameplay dynamics. Also take note that the score of words is unaffected by the letter chosen by the blank tile. Regardless of whether the blank tile represents an X or an A, its letter value remains constant at 0.

We are continuously exploring ways to improve the accessibility of our game and are currently testing the integration of a “dyslexia-friendly” font for all in-game text, including game tiles. In the meantime you might improve readability of the game tiles by changing the Theme (Settings > Theme) to a Theme with more contrast. Player feedback shows that ‘Vegetable Verde’ increases readability for some players.

We are currently aware of an issue where players are stuck on the ‘Logging in…’ screen when starting a game on macOS (14.2.1). If you encounter any issue with your Game Center login within our game, you can try the following steps:

  1. Close Words in Progress
  2. Go to Settings > Game Center and see if you are logged in
  3. If you are not logged in, make sure to log into Game Center with your main account
  4. Start Words in Progress, you should now be able to automatically log in

Or you can try:

  1. Close Words in Progress
  2. Go to Settings > Game Center and see if you are logged in
  3. If you are logged in, try logging out of Game Center (make sure you know your password!)
  4. Start Words in Progress, you should now be prompted to log into Game Center
  5. Log into Game Center from the prompt with your main account

If you still have issues with logging in, try updating your macOS version to the latest version, or send us a message here.

We are currently aware of an issue with a possible ‘corrupted’ Game Center login state that causes the game to be ‘stuck’ in an infinite boot-reboot loop (error code 6 or 101) in older versions of the game. If you encounter this issue, please update to the latest version of Words in Progress.

Alternatively you can try the following steps:

We continue to refine our wordlists based on feedback from both users and experts, leading to periodic updates to our game. These updates may alter seed generation, resulting in variations in letter order between different versions of the game.

To ensure consistency in gameplay between you and your friends, we recommend always having the latest version of the game installed, which can be easily verified through the App Store. To check your current version, navigate to the Main Menu > Bottom Right Info Button > Scroll all the way down.

If you don’t see an Info Button in the bottom right of the Main Menu (but see a Game Language Button instead), you are on an older version and we would advice to update through the App Store.

We currently support 17 languages for in-game texts and 10 languages for the game itself (the words you can make), allowing most players to enjoy the game in their preferred language.

While we are exploring the possibility of adding additional languages, please note that the process of incorporating new languages is extensive and requires considerable effort.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work towards expanding language support in the future.

We are aware of the issue regarding the d-pad not functioning on Apple Remote for the Apple TV. While we work on a fix for this, players can utilize any of the supported controllers as an alternative. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience as we address this issue.

We aim to maintain our servers consistently to ensure uninterrupted access to our online modes. Occasionally, server updates are necessary to enhance our gameplay and game stability. Scheduled server downtime typically occurs on Thursdays at 14:00 CET, lasting no more than 2 to 5 minutes. Your understanding is appreciated as we strive to deliver the best gaming experience possible.
